Ipek- 2024

The word İpek - meaning "silk " in modern Turkish - is derived from the Old Turkic term ipäk, which translates to both silk or thread.
Silk, celebrated for its strength, beauty, and luxurious texture, has long held significant cultural and economic importance in Turkish history.

Inside the silky surface of the fluid cocoon that blurs the vision through ever-changing artifacts, the flow of futuristic forms.
Inspired by Boccioni and his Forme Uniche nella Continuità dello Spazio, they are memories of a shared endeavour into sustaining life through water.

Looking closely to the swirling patterns by which the atmosphere becomes fluid water, you could recognize the Pecile of Hadrian’s Villa, in Tivoli: the water pool,
surrounded by worned-out sculptures depicting ancient gods of water and nature, which mirrored Emperor Hadrian’s memories of the Nile and of his drowned lover Antinoo.

A close weaving of layered influences , Ipek is a testament to connections made of shiny silk, fragile in appearance but unyielding in matter, binding time, place, and meaning into a unified -yet ineffable- whole.

The digital sculpting process had to develop somehow on top of a physical foundation: Ipek, the one and only owner of the final piece, posed on a random morning in the offices of AKT II, Old Street Yard, London. Her pose had to recall the one of the mighty Mesoamerican god Tlatloc, the ruler of water, as depicted in the Code Laud, preserved at the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
Finally, Futuristic dynamism had to be come together with the ancient deity.

Sculpt

After years of technical drafting, coding and heavily parametrically-controlled generative design, I have felt the need to experiment with a better degree of freedom into a digital modeling environment. Adobe Subtance Modeler has captivated me, eventually, thanks to its hassle-free interface and the very intuitive set of commands and actions.

Support

Wind, water and solid rock inspired the whole piece.
The platform that would have had to support the sculpture had to follow these generative elements, while it was computationally generated.
